World Malaria Day 2023: Time to Deliver Zero Malaria
Adopting the Theme: Invest, Innovate, Implement
WHO's Call for Action
World Malaria Day, marked annually on April 25th, is an opportunity for the global community to come together and combat the devastating disease. In 2023, the theme for the day is "Time to Deliver Zero Malaria," emphasizing the urgent need to accelerate efforts towards eliminating malaria from the world.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has adopted this theme to highlight the importance of investing in malaria prevention, control, and elimination; innovating new tools and strategies; and implementing comprehensive interventions at all levels.
Despite significant progress made in recent years, malaria remains a major public health burden, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In 2022, an estimated 619,000 people died from the disease, with Africa accounting for 96% of those deaths.
By investing in malaria programs, we can strengthen surveillance systems, expand access to effective treatments, and develop new vaccines and drugs. By innovating, we can find new ways to combat the disease, such as improved vector control methods and diagnostic tools. And by implementing comprehensive interventions, we can reach the most vulnerable populations and ensure that everyone has access to the protection and treatment they need.
On World Malaria Day 2023, let us all commit to investing, innovating, and implementing until we achieve our goal of zero malaria. Together, we can create a malaria-free future for everyone.
